There's a common assumption that more bathing equals a cleaner, healthier dog. In reality, over-bathing is one of the more common grooming mistakes — and the right frequency depends a lot on coat type and lifestyle, not a single universal number.

For most dogs with a healthy coat and no skin conditions, once every 4-6 weeks is a reasonable baseline. That said, "reasonable baseline" is doing a lot of work in that sentence — the details below matter more than the general rule.
Why Over-Bathing Backfires
A dog's skin produces natural oils that maintain a protective barrier and healthy coat texture. Bathing too frequently — especially with harsh, human, or heavily fragranced shampoos — strips those oils faster than the body can replace them, which can lead to dry, flaky, or irritated skin. Ironically, over-bathing to "keep them clean" can create the very skin issues owners are trying to avoid.
Coat Type Changes the Math
- Double-coated breeds (Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds): less frequent bathing, more frequent brushing. Their undercoat regulates temperature and repels dirt more than people expect — over-bathing can disrupt that natural function.
